Getting a traffic ticket in Texas can have consequences ranging from paying a small fine to landing in jail for more serious offenses, such as driving while intoxicated. For more common offenses, such as speeding or running a red light, successfully completing a Texas drivers safety course can allow you to have your ticket dismissed. Keep the following information in mind if you get a traffic ticket in Texas.
When you receive a ticket, you will need to contact the traffic court listed on your citation before the ticket is due in order to resolve it. Your options include paying the fine for the ticket or fighting it. You must resolve your ticket within 20 business days of receiving it. If you choose to plead guilty and pay the ticket, keep in mind that fines for moving violation tickets in Texas vary by county and depend on what you were ticketed for and your insurance will go up hundreds if not thousands of dollars!
If you receive a ticket and simply pay the fine, you will have points added to your driving record, which can lead to surcharges, having your license suspended, and most damaging, your auto insurance rates will increase. The best way to keep these points from your record is to take a defensive driving course, such as the driver safety course offered by our company and dismiss your ticket completely.
Many drivers are eligible to take a defensive driving course in order to have a ticket for moving violations dismissed, but there are certain exceptions. The following ticket citations are ineligible for having points removed from ones driving record via an online driving school:
- speeding 25 mph or more over the speed limit,
- passing a school bus,
- receiving a moving violation ticket in a construction zone,
- leaving the scene of an accident,
- course participation for another violation in the last 12 months
- having no insurance or lapsed insurance, or
- possessing a commercial driver’s license.
